Google Maps Visibility Report: Measure Your Local Rankings

Why your Google Maps ranking changes between neighbourhoods, what a Maps visibility report checks, how to read it, and 10 actions to take after it.

Introduction

  • When someone in Muscat searches for "dentist", "car wash" or "restaurant near me", Google usually shows Maps results before websites. Where your business appears in those results depends on where the searcher is standing.
  • Many owners search from inside their own shop, see themselves at the top and assume all is well. A customer in another neighbourhood may not see them at all.
  • A Google Maps visibility report measures your position from different points across the city, checks the parts of your Business Profile you control, and compares you with nearby competitors.
  • If your business does not appear on Maps at all yet, start with the basics in how to appear on Google Maps, then come back to this report to measure progress.
  • An honesty note: Google does not publish weights for local ranking factors. Any report of this kind is indicative and based on public data; it cannot guarantee a specific position.

Why your position changes from one area to another

  • Google's Business Profile help pages say local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or from the place named in the search), and prominence (how well known your business is, including reviews and mentions across the web).
  • Because of distance, a clinic in Al Khuwair can rank first for someone searching from Al Khuwair and not appear for someone in Seeb, Muttrah or Al Amerat.
  • The same applies in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Doha, Kuwait City, Manama, Sanaa, Aden, Cairo and Amman: the larger and more spread out the city, the bigger the gap between neighbourhoods.
  • Other things matter too: how the search is worded, its language (Arabic or English), the device and the searcher's history.
  • The practical lesson: one screenshot from your office proves nothing. You need measurements from several points and for several search terms.

What you need before preparing the report

  • View or manager access to the Business Profile, to read its performance data such as calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • A list of the neighbourhoods or areas your customers actually come from, not the whole city.
  • Three to five search terms your customers use in Arabic and English, ideally taken from the real questions they ask on WhatsApp and on calls.
  • The names of three to five competitors you know, so your business is compared with them as well as with whoever appears in the results.
  • Links to your website, social accounts and local directory listings, to check data consistency.

What a Maps visibility report checks

1. Profile completeness

  • Name: matches your signage and real business name, with no keyword stuffing. Google's guidelines forbid it, and breaking them can get the profile suspended.
  • Address and pin: the pin sits in the right spot, and service areas are set accurately for businesses that serve customers at their location.
  • Hours: regular hours plus special hours for Ramadan, Eid and public holidays.
  • Phone and website: a number that gets answered, and a website link that leads to the most relevant branch page rather than always to the home page.
  • Description, services and products: clearly written, in Arabic and English if your customers search in both.
  • Attributes: such as parking, card payments or accessibility, depending on what your category offers.

2. Categories

  • The primary category is one of the most important choices on the profile, because it decides which searches your business is considered relevant for.
  • Secondary categories should cover real services you offer, not services you wish to rank for.
  • The report compares your primary category with those of the competitors ranking above you.

3. Reviews

  • Count: compared with nearby competitors, not as an absolute number.
  • Recency: the date of the latest reviews, and whether they arrive steadily or in occasional bursts.
  • Replies: the share of reviews you have answered, how fast, and in what tone.
  • Content: what keeps coming up in praise and complaints, and whether customers mention services by name.
  • Language: reviews in Arabic and English, answered in the reviewer's language.
  • A warning: buying reviews or writing them under other names breaks Google's policies and puts the profile at risk of removal or suspension.

4. Photos and updates

  • Number, recency and quality of photos: the exterior (it helps customers find you), the interior, the team, products or work.
  • Real photos beat stock images, because they show the place as the customer will find it.
  • Customer photos: anything outdated, misleading or inappropriate.
  • Posts and offers on the profile: published regularly, or stopped months ago.

5. Name, address and phone consistency (NAP)

  • Compare your business details on the website, contact page, footer, social accounts, local directories, Apple Maps and Bing.
  • Keep the Arabic and English spelling of the name consistent; different spellings across platforms confuse customers.
  • Look for old numbers or previous addresses left over after a branch moved.

6. Nearby competitors

  • Who appears in the top three at each measurement point.
  • Their categories, review count and recency, photos, and distance from the centre of the area.
  • Whether your strongest rival actually competes for the same customers, or just shares your category.

7. Searches from different points in the city

  • Method: a grid of points covering your service area, recording your position at each point for three to five search terms.
  • Terms: in Arabic and English, for example "مغسلة سيارات", "car wash" and "car wash in Seeb".
  • Output: a colour-coded map showing where you rank near the top and where you disappear.
  • Repeat: measure again from the same points with the same terms each month or after any major change; otherwise the comparison is not fair.
  • Manual checks by changing your location are possible but limited and affected by your own history, which is why dedicated tools are usually used for this.

How to read the report

What you seeLikely explanationWhat to do
Strong near the shop, weak further awayNormal distance effectBuild prominence: reviews, a strong branch page, local mentions
Weak even near the shopA relevance or profile problemReview category, name, services and profile status
Good in English, weak in ArabicMissing Arabic contentAdd an Arabic description, services and Arabic replies
A competitor ahead at every pointA gap in reviews, categories or photosCompare item by item and start with the biggest gap

  • Do not chase rankings in neighbourhoods your customers never come from; focus on the areas you actually serve.
  • Compare each report with the previous one, not with your impressions or a competitor's claims; the trend across months matters more than one month's figure.
  • Tie the report to results: did calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile go up? These figures appear in the profile's own performance data.

10 actions after the report

  1. Correct the primary category and add secondary categories that match your real services.
  2. Make your name, address and phone identical on the website and every platform and directory.
  3. Complete the description, services and products in Arabic and English.
  4. Update special hours before Ramadan, Eid and public holidays.
  5. Set up a regular way to ask for reviews, such as sending the review link on WhatsApp once the job is done.
  6. Reply to every review within a few days, in the reviewer's language and a professional tone.
  7. Add new real photos every month, starting with the exterior and entrance.
  8. Publish an update or offer on the profile regularly.
  9. Link the profile to a proper branch page on your website with the address, map, services and structured data.
  10. Watch for edits suggested by others on your profile, and measure again from the same points after four to eight weeks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Why do I see my business first when my customers don't?

Maps results depend on where the searcher is, and you usually search from inside or near your shop. Your own search history also shapes what you see, which is why the report measures from several points across the city.

+When will I see the effect of improvements on my Maps ranking?

No timeline or position can be guaranteed; it depends on competition and the state of your profile. A practical rule is to measure again from the same points four to eight weeks after the changes.

+Should I add keywords to my business name on Maps?

No. Google's guidelines require the real name you use on signage and documents. Stuffing the name with keywords can get the profile suspended, and any short-term gain is not worth the risk.

+Can I appear in a city where I have no branch?

Only to a limited extent, because the profile is tied to a real address or service area and distance is a core factor. A clearer route is a website page for each city you serve, plus ads targeted to those cities.
